Automated valet parking in reality

A few days ago, the Automated Valet Parking (AVP) lot, a key project of the first phase of the Beijing High-level Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone, basically completed its stage 1.0 experimental environment and will soon enter the next stage of construction.

The project has selected the ground and underground parking lots of the Boda Building in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area (BDA) for intelligent transformation, and is building a key technology test and verification platform for AVP based on "car-park coordination" technical architecture. The demonstration zone will unite enterprises to develop car-park linkage, commissioning testing and trial operation.

AVP is an L4 self-driving technology that solves users' "difficulties in parking in the last mile".

It can greatly improve parking efficiency, reduce safety risks, and comprehensively improve the level of urban traffic management, thus driving the development of vehicle manufacturers, operators and other enterprises along the industrial chains.

Currently, limited by some industrial pain points, AVP has not yet realized its full potential. A standardized, low-cost AVP parking lot technical plan that can take into account the technical needs of various cars and can be promoted has not really taken shape. 

Beijing's High-Level Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone plays the role of "first-time trial", considering factors such as field-side technology and vehicle-side intelligence level, as well as construction costs, and finally clarified the concept of "vehicle-field coordination" standardization construction.

In the 1.0 phase of the project, through the deployment of intelligent sensing equipment, edge computing nodes, communication equipment, visual signs, and other factors in the parking lot, it provides autonomous parking vehicles with AVP special signs, obstacle information, vehicle-side blind spot information and information on vacant parking spaces.

It will also monitor the status of autonomous parking vehicles, realizing functions such as automatic driving in parking lots and fixed-point parking.

After AVP self-parking users drive into the north gate of the Boda Building, they can simple get out of the car and enter the office building. 

Just start autonomous parking in the AVP vehicle handover area, and the vehicle will take the initiative to drive into the AVP autonomous parking space in the ground or underground parking lot. 

In the first phase of the project, BAIC provided the ArcFox test vehicle, and Baidu provided the Lincoln MKZ and Weimar test vehicles for the field test.

In the 2.0 phase of the project, infrastructure that meets the needs of car companies will be fully deployed, and commercialized field-side multi-vehicle path planning, high-precision map services, auxiliary positioning, ODD monitoring and emergency handling functions will be added to adapt to R&D needs of different enterprises.
