E-Town practices in autonomous driving

Updated: 2021-11-19

There are robo-taxis, unmanned retail vehicles, unmanned delivery vehicles, and unmanned sweepers in parks...autonomous driving is being gradually integrated into the lives of residents in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA).

With the advancement of Beijing's High-Level Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone and Intelligent Connected Vehicles Policy Pilot Zone, a series of policies have been implemented in the BDA.

In this context, the BDA has welcomed a large number of leading companies in the field of autonomous driving, innovative technologies have been created, application scenarios have been realized, and industrial reports and specifications have been released.

Following the BDA's announcement of the country's first policy for allowing unmanned delivery vehicles on roads and opening of highway testing, a new policy has been issued.

Beijing's Intelligent Connected Vehicles Policy Pilot Zone has officially started unmanned testing scenarios, clarifying that applicants are able to start a new phase of "unmanned as the main driver".

The first unmanned test section to open is about 20 square kilometers long in the BDA, with over 100 kilometers of urban roads.

The first 15 test vehicles are from Baidu and Pony.ai, which have settled in the BDA.

Currently, Beijing's High-Level Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone has completed the first phase of construction and started the second phase, focusing on the implementation of five special projects referred to as "road expansion, strong cloud, networking, connected vehicles, and building map".

It is expected that the smart car, wise road, real-time cloud, reliable network and accurate map systems will be completed next year.
