In the recently released "2023 Beijing Birdwatching Guide," the Nanhaizi Park (Milu Park) was recognized as one of Beijing's top three recommended birdwatching locations.

"This September, we conducted a survey of autumn birds in the Milu Park and recorded over 3,000 birds from 40 species across 14 families," said Chen Qi, a staff member from the Beijing Biodiversity Conservation Research Center.

This time of year marks the peak of bird migration, and Beijing, situated on the East Asia-Australasia flyway, welcomes swarms of migratory birds traveling north and south. Some of these birds choose to take a rest in the park to replenish food and energy. Therefore, during this season, it's easy to encounter these flying "little neighbors."

Strolling along the tree-lined path, you can hear the melodious calls of marsh tits and goldfinches hiding in the woods. Busy woodpeckers can be seen drilling holes to find food, while flocks of geese and raptors soar in the sky.

Pausing by the shore, chestnut-eared buntings and brown-headed crows are feasting in the reeds. The "giant panda of birds," the Chinese penduline tit, is leisurely enjoying the autumn sunlight while gazing across the lake. 

The red-headed buntings that have made this place their home for the entire summer are now harmoniously meeting with the freshly arrived green-winged teals.

Why do they all love Beijing E-Town?

As of May 2022, a total of 306 bird species belonging to 21 orders, 64 families, and 163 genera have been recorded within Beijing E-Town, accounting for 61 percent of Beijing's bird species. 

From May 2022 to the present, an additional 12 bird species have been recorded in E-Town New Area. 

Nanhaizi is located in the southwest of Beijing E-Town, and due to years of ecological protection and development, it has become one of the most biodiverse areas in Beijing E-Town. 

It features expansive water surfaces, meandering waterways, soft riverbanks, and varying terrain, coupled with dense vegetation, and excellent hiding places for wildlife. This environment continually attracts birds to nest and rest, making it a great destination for city residents to relax and observe the birds.
