Tasting winter solstice

Updated: 2023-12-22

We welcome the Winter Solstice today.

For those in the northern hemisphere, this day marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

While the northern hemisphere experiences the cold of winter, people in the southern hemisphere celebrate the longest day of the year on this day, celebrating it as the Summer Solstice.

In northern China, dumplings are a "must-have" food treat during the Winter Solstice.

As the winter is chilly, human ears are easily made cold. So, dumplings shaped like ears are believed to protect that part of our anatomy.

In southern China, people like to gather with family on the Winter Solstice, sit around the fire, and enjoy a bowl of steaming glutinous rice dumplings. It's a joyous and harmonious time for family reunion.

There's a saying in folklore that goes, "The Winter Solstice is as significant as the Spring Festival," making it both an important solar term and a traditional festival.

Residents of E-Town New Area have created paintings and calligraphies on the theme of "Tasting the Winter Solstice”.

Through the strokes of their brushes and the splashes of ink, they express their understanding of traditional culture and their love for a beautiful life, which adds a warm touch to the cold Winter Solstice.

Let's appreciate it together.
