Laboratory for laser communication technology unveiled in Beijing E-Town

Updated: 2024-10-15

The Aerospace Information Research Institute, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed a cooperation agreement with Beijing Rongwei Technology Co., Ltd. on Oct 12 in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (Beijing E-Town) to collaborate on key technical research in areas such as laser communication, calibration and measurement.

During the signing ceremony, the Joint Laboratory for Laser Communication Technology, which was co-established by the two, was unveiled in the Beijing E-Town. The first research and development project of the laboratory was also launched on that day.

"Laser communication is an international hot topic, and there are many key technologies in this field that urgently need to be tackled in our country. Focusing on domestic satellite-ground transmission, as satellite technology continues to advance, the data generated by its detection is growing exponentially, while the currently widely used microwave communication is unable to meet the downstream transmission requirements of massive satellite data," said Huang Peng, a researcher at the Aerospace Institute. "We hope to conduct cutting-edge research on laser communication through the laboratory, allowing more satellite data to take the 'high-speed road' of satellite-ground communication."

The first research project of the laboratory is based on the satellite-ground laser communication ground station previously led by the Aerospace Institute and built with the participation of Rongwei Technology. Through joint research, the project aims to increase the data transmission rate of this ground station from the current 10G to 100G within a year.

"The ability to collaborate with a national-level research institute is due to the cutting-edge technology we have accumulated in the field of laser communication," said Xu Lu, deputy general manager of Rongwei Technology.

Xu said that Rongwei Technology's ability to focus on research is supported by the strong policy support and comprehensive services provided by Beijing E-Town. “In the future, we also hope that the laboratory will become a flagship of E-Town, attracting more companies to settle in and develop together with us."
